director, VELOCITY CAMPUS
I’m John and I am the Director of Concept and manage the Concept Team on campus. I am excited to help design captivating programming that intrigues students and inspires innovative thinking throughout the university. I want to create great experiences that lead to outstanding careers post-graduation for all UWaterloo students, both as employees and entrepreneurs. When I co-founded Nicoya in 2012, I experienced the impact of the Velocity program first hand. It provided the foundational knowledge we needed for a chance at success. I spent 7 years as CSO at Nicoya as the company grew from 2 to 40 people. Last year, I completed my Masters in Business Administration from Lazaridis School of Business and Economics. I love being a student and spent a lot of time in school, completing my bachelors of chemical engineering at McGill University and my PhD at Imperial College of London. Outside of work you can usually find me rowing on the Grand River, competing in an axe throwing league or cooking a big meal at home.
Campus marketing & communications Manager
I’m Michelle and I am the Campus Marketing & Communications Manager. I’m thrilled to be able to create, inform and connect students with content and experiences that will foster innovation. Prior to joining Concept, I held a marketing position with the Kitchener Rangers Hockey Club for more than 14 years. With the Rangers I was able to develop and grow the brand, produce engaging events, and expand fan and community impact through partnerships, programs and sponsorship. Before that I was with The Record and my own graphic design and advertising agency, working with numerous clients in the Waterloo Region and across Ontario. Outside of work, you’ll find me enjoying time with my family, exploring new restaurants, trying to master the perfect latte and getting outdoors as much as possible.
Campus Entrepreneurship Experience Manager
I’m Tina and I am the Campus Entrepreneurship Experience Manager for Concept. I am excited to design inclusive entrepreneurial and innovative programming for students from all programs and backgrounds. As a former Speech Communication and Business Student at the University of Waterloo, I discovered my own passion for innovation while taking Business Entrepreneurship Technology (BET) courses, working at a Velocity startup and living in the Velocity Residence on-campus. These experiences made me realize that you do not need to come from a technical background in order to explore a career in tech. After graduation, I worked for Communitech where I was able to develop and lead student programming initiatives in partnership with local tech startups, scale-ups and corporate innovation labs. When I’m not working, you can find me hiking, rollerblading, or exploring with my dogs (Milo and Bolt!).
ENTREPRENEURSHIP EXPERIENCE COORDINATOR
I’m Emily and I am the Entrepreneurship Experience Coordinator at Concept. I plan and facilitate programs for entrepreneurial-minded students, including the 5K competition! I am an alumna of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (also known as Ontario Tech University) where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Digital Media Studies. Before joining the Concept team, I worked at Ontario Tech’s Student Learning Centre, where I gained a passion for creating informative, engaging, and inclusive programming to encourage student success in all aspects of their academic journeys. My other interests include baseball, reading, playing trivia games, and trying new recipes!
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF VELOCITY
I’m Adrien and I am the Executive Director of Velocity, leading Concept and the Velocity Incubator. I am extremely passionate about maximizing the experience of UWaterloo students and furthering business ideas and technologies that have great potential. At a high-level, I ensure that Velocity’s missions and activities align with, and are well understood in the community. I began at Velocity in 2017 and worked with many startups as the Deeptech and Science Advisor. Before joining Velocity, I led many corporate R&D and product development initiatives at Xerox, and I was a principal investigator at the California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA. I am a proud UWaterloo Science alumnus and lifelong learner, having most recently completed an Executive Master’s in Technology Management at the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics. Outside of work you’ll find me camping, reading or exploring the great outdoors!
